Pipe Layer - Job description

Summary: Under the direction of the Pipe Foreman, the Pipe Layer is responsible for the skilled installation and maintenance of sewer and water mains, and related appurtenances. The position will also be responsible for the skilled operation and use of levels, lasers, hand and mechanical compactors, cut-off saws, and any other related equipment.

  • Uses hand tools and small equipment (ie. tampers) to prepare surfaces to grade and compaction.
  • Assists in the installation of in ground piping for water, storm, waste
  • Perform pre operation inspections of tools and equipment and report deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Safely and respectfully operate equipment to meet daily plan and production targets.
  • Effective communication using a 2-way radio system
  • Understand and adhere to all policies, procedures, and standards
  • Train on new equipment when requested
  • Take care to utilize materials to their fullest extent looking for opportunities to save or reuse materials where possible.
  • Participate and provide feedback during company toolbox meetings
  • Work with others in a team environment
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Pipe Foreman - Job Description

Summary: Under the direction of the Construction Manager, the Pipe Foreman is responsible planning preparing, directing and installing municipal service connections and commercial site services.   The Pipe Foreman will be responsible for the management of all on-site pipe workers and enforcement of all required safety and work regulation policies.  All pipe crew members and individuals on-site performing site services or service connections shall take direction from the pipe foremen, who are responsible for assigning required work and applying resources to accomplish that work.

  • Assign staff to various tasks and coordinate the civil pipe team.
  • Identify possible Safety Hazards on site, minimize and manage risk to the Company.
  • Ensure high standards of workmanship and efficiency on site.
  • Ensure the efficient use of labour, machines and materials used by the crew
  • Manage production field staff. Provide regular and consistent feedback.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Ideal Candidate Pipe Labourer :

  • Experience operating various tools and equipment in a construction environment
  • Applied and demonstrated ability to operate equipment according to manufacturer recommendations
  • Worked in and or around construction sites with knowledge of site service installations (water, sanitary, storm)
  • Experience setting grades using laser level
  • Considers showing up consistantly and ready to work to be a priority.
  • Applied knowledge of:
    • elevations, grades, slopes
    • ditching/trenching
    • fine grading
    • compaction
    • soil and aggregate types
    • loading and receiving materials

 

 

Ideal Candidate Pipe Foreman:

  • Worked in and around municipal services and understand municipal standards
  • Understand and able to coordinate inspections, chlorination, pressure tests and other quality control requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to plan out work for pipe installations according to drawings and specifications
  • Demonstrated ability to manage small crew
  • Minimum 5 years in this type of role
  • Ability to understand and execute scheduling, read blueprints, schematics, field drawings and plans
  • Valid drivers license in good standing
  • A solid understanding of construction trades and construction techniques
  • Strong management, delegation, planning and leadership skills
  • Effectiveness in the areas of construction safety and productivity
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Able to create alternative solutions to problems
  • Excellent time management and project management skills
  • High level of sound and independent judgment and reasoning.
  • Working safely is a condition of employment.

 

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds over short distances.
  • Access to a reliable vehicle.  Public transit is not an option.
  • Expertise and proven experience with safe workplace initiatives.
